1964 con Jane y en inglés

Os presento a mi vecina inglesa, Jane. Comentario:
I felt sad when I realised that your father was giving regular beatings to your mother and to the kids as well. I felt sorry for you and wanted to come to your rescue! I wanted to tell your mother to report your father to the police and have him arrested. I felt sad that your mother wasn’t often at home and that you had to do without your mother such a lot of the time.
Your first school was horrible, I felt very angry with the cruel and lazy teacher and how he treated you all, but the part with the fish falling into the toilet made me laugh. You described the incident in great detail and I could imagine myself in that very awkward position!
It made me laugh when you bought your first pet, a yellow duck, and you covered its eyes so that it wouldn’t see the roasted birds for sale on the way home. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when the duck jumped out of the window and died and the doorman told you off for throwing animals out of the window. You didn’t have much luck with pets, did you?
I laughed at your attempts to sell scrap metal that you had collected (stolen).
The part where you wrote that you and Jesus had many things in common (las hostias, ver el cielo y tener un padre que te abandonaba en los momentos importantes de la vida) was very clever in my opinion. It made me think
The parts of the book that describe your drug usage made me want to shout at you ‘don’t do it Charlie, don’t do it’. But too late because you had already done it. When the debt collectors were after you I felt afraid and didn’t think you could ever pay up and escape from them.
The photographs amused me, especially the one of you at your first communion.
When your father was suffering from Alzheimer’s. I could relate to that because my uncle suffered in the same way. I was expecting some more amusing stories about his actions but mostly the stories were sad ones.
I was sad to read that you never knew anything more about the friends that you had made whilst in the hospital.
I was amused by the fact that, in your job selling space in the porno business, you had to look at porn sites on the Internet. Tough job but someone has to do it! But what is an 803? I hesitate to ask my Spanish friends in case it means something really filthy!
In the epilogue you correctly guess that most readers would be asking themselves why you were telling the story of your life if you weren’t a famous person. I was asking myself this very same question and I loved your answer relating it to a scene in the film ‘Blade Runner’.
The book leaves me wanting to know more and hoping that there is a sequel.
